Frederick Based Red Cross Volunteers to Meet Up with Isaac

Red Cross of the Chesapeake Region volunteers are heading south to prepare for Topical Storm Isaac who seems to have New Orleans in its crosshairs, bearing down just ahead of the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Amongst those who are already there is Middletown resident and Red Cross of Fredrick Chapter volunteer Marilyn Wright (photo attached).

Wright is one of eight Red Cross workers from the Chesapeake Region already on the ground or traveling to Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana, standing by to work in shelters, provide mass feeding and comfort to those displaced by the storm. Meanwhile four other local Red Crossers are en route driving two Emergency Response Vehicles (photo attached) that will join a fleet of others able to patrol hard hit neighborhoods to deliver clean drinking water, warm meals, blankets and assess damage to homes. One of those Emergency Response Vehicles is based out of the Frederick Red Cross chapter.

These Maryland Red Crossers are part of a team of 1,000 disaster workers standing by with materials and supplies positioned for use. Truckloads of disaster supplies and clean-up items are ready to go in Red Cross disaster warehouses located throughout the region and are ready to ship additional emergency supplies to hard hit states if needed. There are also pre-stocked ready-to-eat meals and two mobile kitchens that have been coordinated thanks to local officials and community partners.

This is Ms. Wright’s second national deployment with the Red Cross. She previously served in Texas after Hurricane Ike. She has been a Frederick County Disaster Action Team Volunteer for four years responding to local disasters including home fires. She is currently positioned in Gainesville, Florida awaiting assignment. More Red Cross workers in Maryland stand ready if needed.

Isaac is expected to cause serious flooding throughout the region, and the Red Cross needs your help. Click to donate online, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
