Give the Gift of Life This Summer - Give Blood in the Triad

Give the Gift of Life This Summer
Did you know? Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood.

The American Red Cross is encouraging Triad residents to roll up their sleeves and give the gift of life this summer, when blood donations are typically low. During the summer months—when people spend more time doing recreational or seasonal activities—blood donors may travel, start new routines, or simply overlook donating blood. Historically, during the months of June, July and August, about two fewer donors give blood at each Red Cross blood drive than what patients need.

Day in and day out, hospital patients need blood for emergency and ongoing care related to serious illness, accident or trauma. In fact, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. That someone could be local patients like Samantha Riggs, who is a heart transplant and blood recipient—or twins Juillian and Jillian Cave, who needed blood at the time of their birth.

This summer, the Red Cross hopes to encourage at least two more donors to give blood at every Red Cross blood drive — above what’s expected — to help ensure lifesaving blood products are available at a moment’s notice.
