Grand Canyon Chapter IHL Workshop: October 2013

Red Cross international humanitarian law workshop

The American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter is conducting an international humanitarian law workshop, with intentions of raising awareness about human dignity in the midst of war, the Geneva Conventions, the basic rules of international humanitarian law and the role of the Red Cross during armed conflict.

The free seminar is called “Humanity in the Midst of War: An Introduction to International Humanitarian Law.” All individuals must register to attend.

According to international humanitarian law, parties to an armed conflict must always distinguish between civilians and those involved in fighting, and they’re supposed to take all precautions to spare civilian lives. In addition, medical staff and facilities, as well as humanitarian relief personnel, should be protected from attack. Through an informal, hands-on approach utilizing group activities, class discussion and multimedia, this course invites participants to reflect on their images and perceptions of armed conflict and explore the powerful and fundamental concept of human dignity.
