March is Red Cross Month! Join us for the official kick-off on Thursday, February 28, 2013 where we’ll release the one year report on the Red Cross response to 2012’s “March 2nd Tornadoes,” and officially introduce and launch the Tri-State Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD), a committee created to plan for long-term recovery. The press conference will be held at the American Red Cross (2111 Dana Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45207) beginning at 2:00 p.m.

The Tri-State COAD (Community Organizations Active in Disaster) is a committee that brings local community organizations together to assist in long term recovery. Currently, the COAD consists of 195 (faith-based groups, voluntary organizations, civic clubs, social service agencies, and emergency management agencies) organizations and over 270 people. During the press conference, the Red Cross will introduce community organizations and leaders that are involved in the COAD and how this committee will function.

“The Red Cross has been working diligently since last year’s tornadoes to convene our community partners in an effort to build resilient communities,” said Trish Smitson, Chief Executive Officer for the Greater Cincinnati-Dayton Region. “We are excited to be a host site for the COAD, which includes organizations like United Way, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities and Hamilton and Dearborn EMA,” said Smitson. “The Red Cross has provided immediate relief for people affected by disasters for years. However, we realize that there is a real need for a long term recovery system. When communities pull resources to help those in need, it is difficult to know where those resources should go. Through organization of the COAD, preparations and plans have been put in place to ensure that our community has assistance and recovery efforts as needed during times of disaster, like the March 2nd Tornadoes.”
