Jane Gendron Receives Macsherry Family Award

Jane Gendron
I have always admired the quiet way the Macsherry family gives back to the community.

Congratulations to Jane Gendron, Community Chapter Executive of the American Red Cross Northern New York Chapter, who received the 2012 Macsherry Family Community Spirit Award earlier this week at the United Way Campaign Celebration Luncheon in Watertown.

The Macsherry Family is a well-known and affluent family in Watertown and Jefferson County, and Mary and Dick Macsherry have always been generous to philanthropic organizations throughout the North Country. The award that Jane received is given annually to an individual who “through extensive service in our community, truly embodies the United Way spirit.”

We’ll let Jane take it from here:

“It was quite a surprise for me when my name was called! The award is special to me for two reasons: First, Jayn Graves presented it to me. Jayn has been the CEO of the United Way of Northern New York for over 26 years, and I consider Jayn a mentor and friend.

“Second, the award is from the Macsherry family. I have known Mr. and Mrs. Macsherry since I was a child. As an adult, I have always admired the quiet way the Macsherry family gives back to the community. Dick is famous for stating he would not live in a community without a United Way, and if there was no United Way he would start one. Many agencies have benefitted from the generosity of the Macsherry family, including the American Red Cross.”
