DISASTER UPDATES: More than 100 people spent June 13 in shelters in Oklahoma after last month’s tornadoes. The American Red Cross has served more than 448,000 meals and snacks, distributed 387,000-plus relief items and made 19,000-plus health and mental health contacts, utilizing 830-plus workers, including six from the Grand Canyon Chapter. … More than 230 people spent June 13 in Red Cross shelters in Colorado after last week’s wildfires. The Red Cross has served more than 2,300 meals and snacks.

BLOOD DRIVE: The Grand Canyon Chapter is holding a blood drive June 19 at its headquarters, at 6135 N. Black Canyon Highway in Phoenix. Donations will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Emergency Operations Center. For an appointment, call 520-230-7295 or visit www.redcrossblood.org and enter the sponsor code “arcgrand.”

TWEET FOR RELIEF: Want to contribute to the Red Cross disaster relief fund? For every Tweet that’s submitted at www.rirelief.com, Residence Inn will donate $5 to the Red Cross, with a maximum donation of $200,000. The fundraiser ends June 30.

50-50 RAFFLE: The Grand Canyon Chapter is holding a 50-50 raffle for the Phoenix Mercury-New York Liberty game from 5:30-8:30 p.m. July 2 at US Airways Center, at 201 E. Jefferson St. in Phoenix. Tickets will be sold by Grand Canyon Chapter volunteers from the time the doors open until the end of halftime. Purchase your ticket outside the arena, in the Casino Arizona Pavilion or on the concourses. If you’re a Grand Canyon Chapter volunteer wanting to sell raffle tickets, RSVP to Grand Canyon Chapter Development Associate Kim Crosby at 602-336-6686 or development.gcc.az@redcross.org. Volunteers should wear a Red Cross shirt and meet at the Starbucks inside the pavilion at 5 p.m. If you’re a volunteer and you don’t have a Red Cross shirt, please advise Crosby.

AMERICORPS MEMBERS NEEDED: The Grand Canyon Chapter is accepting applications for AmeriCorps National Preparedness and Response Corps members, with a focus on disaster preparedness, response and recovery, community outreach and volunteer support. Members will complete projects that enhance organizational service delivery, expand community resources and help Arizona residents prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Applicants must be high school graduates who are at least 18, and their own vehicle is highly recommended. The service term lasts from Aug. 5, 2013 to July 4, 2014. VOLUNTEER HONORED: Gilbert resident Phil Mele was recognized by Gilbert Mayor John Lewis during a Gilbert City Council meeting for his work with the Grand Canyon Chapter. Mele received the Grand Canyon Chapter’s Rookie of the Year Award last month during the chapter’s volunteer recognition event at the Phoenix Zoo.

GETTING PREPARED: The Grand Canyon Chapter accepted 250 emergency preparedness kits from HandsOn Greater Phoenix at the Phoenix Convention Center. University of Phoenix graduates and their families made the kits for a service project.

TORNADO RELIEF: The Grand Canyon Chapter received a $400 donation from the Havasu Employee Association Team for Oklahoma tornado relief. The Havasu Employee Association Team is a nonprofit organization that’s comprised of federal employees of the Bureau of Land Management field office in Lake Havasu City.

MORE TORNADO RELIEF: Grand Canyon Chapter volunteer public information officer Sandra Zerner raised about $300 through a “flipathon” for Red Cross tornado relief efforts in Oklahoma. Gymnasts at AZ Air Time in Scottsdale received pledges for the Red Cross based on how many flips or jumps they completed.
