Local American Red Cross Announces Tony Young as New CEO

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 16, 2012 — The American Red Cross San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter today announced that Tony Young has been named Chief Executive Officer of the organization.

“This is a great day for the Red Cross. Tony is the perfect choice to lead the chapter,” said Bill Trumphfeller, Board of Directors Chair for the Red Cross and President of Nuffer, Smith, Tucker, Inc. “We truly believe he will help further the Red Cross mission within our community as the organization continues to provide food and shelter in emergencies, assist members of our armed forces and their families, teach lifesaving skills, and more.”

Young, 47, is no stranger to the San Diego community. The long-time San Diegan

has spent his career in public service advocating for policies and services that are critical to the lives within the community. Since 2004, he has served as a member of the San Diego City Council in various leadership positions, including Council President since 2010. Before turning to local government, he taught middle school for 10 years. Young received a degree in Socio-Economics from Howard University, teaching credentials at University of San Diego, and more recently graduated from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

“I’m honored and humbled to accept this position and look forward to serving the needs of our community,” said Young. “We know many San Diegans are not prepared for an emergency or major disaster. I intend to focus on our chapter’s vision of community preparedness.”

Young added, “Overall, I most look forward to continuing to support San Diego and Imperial Counties through the vital work the American Red Cross does each and every day.”

Young will replace outgoing CEO Joe W. Craver who announced his retirement earlier this year. Craver will remain with the organization until Jan. 31, 2013 to ensure a smooth transition.
