Local Area Volunteers Provide Superstorm Sandy Relief

More than 10 weeks after Superstorm Sandy, the American Red Cross continues to help people by providing food, emotional support and longer-term assistance.

January 15, 2013 - We have deployed 300 disaster workers and six ERVs from our region for the Superstorm Sandy relief efforts and we continue to deploy workers.

  • Bay Area – 129 deployments, representing 92 individuals
  • Santa Cruz County – 76 deployments, representing 73 individuals
  • Silicon Valley – 71 deployments
  • Monterey Bay – 24 deployments
  • Superstorm Sandy was a massive storm that caused a tremendous amount of destruction. The American Red Cross has responded with what is our biggest U.S. disaster response in five years. More than 10 weeks after Superstorm Sandy, the American Red Cross continues to help people by providing food, emotional support and longer-term assistance.

    To date, the Red Cross has served more than 10.5 million meals and snacks, and provided more than 108,000 health services and emotional support contacts to people affected by Sandy. The Red Cross has deployed more than 16,500 disaster workers from all 50 states; about 90 percent of these workers are volunteers. The Red Cross has also distributed more than 6.9 million relief items. Since Sandy hit, response organizations have provided more than 158,000 shelter stays. The Red Cross provided more than 81,000 of those stays.

    Nearly 1,000 Red Cross workers are still on the ground supporting survivors through our relief work even as we begin our longer-term recovery efforts. Volunteers are providing food, water, relief supplies, health services and emotional support in some areas of New York. We continue to operate fixed feeding sites and provide some mobile feeding in areas where there is still a need. The Red Cross is also helping to fund several community food banks in New York to help provide an additional 60,000 meals a day to people in the hardest hit areas. In both New York and New Jersey, trained Red Cross workers are helping provide people assistance with home repairs, rent, utility deposits and connecting them with social service programs.

    Part of the Red Cross efforts over the next several months will involve one-on-one work helping those who have trouble finding assistance on their own. These are the types of activities a survivor doesn’t want to go through alone, and Red Cross workers can provide expertise and a shoulder to lean on during the process. In addition, the Red Cross will be supporting projects and programs of other non-profit groups in the New York and New Jersey areas, such as working with several local food banks to help Sandy survivors have access to food during the new year.

    FINANCIAL DONATIONS NEEDED The Red Cross has been helping people since before Sandy made landfall and will continue to help for weeks to come as families get back on their feet. This is likely to be the biggest Red Cross response in the U.S. in the past five years. People can also text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. People can also use the “donate” feature on the free Red Cross Apps to support the Red Cross relief response. Contributions may also be sent to local American Red Cross chapters.
