Red Cross to Offer Nurse Assistant Training Scholarships for Veterans/Caregivers

The Red Cross Nurse Assistant Training Program (NAT) provides Wounded Warriors, immediate family members and caregivers with the information and skills they need to become certified nurse assistants (CNA).

ST. PETERSBURG, FL, Tuesday, January 21, 2014…The American Red Cross St. Petersburg office has been selected to receive ten Nurse Assistant Training Program scholarships for training service members/veterans or their immediate family or caregivers in our community. The St. Petersburg Red Cross Nurse Assistant Training Center is one of only seven sites in the country that were selected to receive the scholarships from a partnership between the Wounded Warrior Project and the American Red Cross.

Through this partnership, the Red Cross and Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) will support wounded, ill or injured service members/veterans who incur or incurred service-connected wounds, injuries and illnesses (physical and psychological) on or after September 11, 2001. Support also extends to the immediate family members or caregivers of eligible service members.

The Red Cross Nurse Assistant Training Program (NAT) provides Wounded Warriors, immediate family members and caregivers with the information and skills they need to become certified nurse assistants (CNA). After completing the course and passing a state certification exam, nurse assistants have skills that provide them with employment opportunities in a variety of health care environments, including long-term care facilities, acute care facilities and in-home health care environments.

The Red Cross has been involved in nursing for more than 100 years and has provided nurse assistant training for the past two decades. American Red Cross Nurse Assistant Training provides course participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to work as a nurse assistant, providing quality care for individuals in long-term care, acute care and home care settings. Students must be 18 years of age OR have a high school diploma or GED. WWP scholars must either be Wounded Warriors, a Wounded Warrior immediate family member or caregiver.

This Florida Board of Nursing approved curriculum combines classroom instruction with hands-on training to give the student confidence that they have the academic, practical and social skills for a successful career.

Students who successfully complete the Red Cross Nurse Assistant Training course are qualified to take their state exam to become a Certified Nurse Assistant. Once state certification is achieved, students will be able to seek employment as a Certified Nurse Assistant in long-term care facilities and other locations.
