Local Volunteers at Isaac Relief

Isaac Volunteer - Little Girl
“We’re estimating that this massive relief operation for Isaac could cost as much as tens of millions of dollars, and our costs are growing by the hour.” - Charley Shimanski, Senior Vice President for Red Cross Disaster Services

As Isaac’s floodwaters recede and people begin to return to their neighborhoods, the American Red Cross Chapters in the Greater Bay Area and Central Coast have sent more than 80 volunteers to the Gulf region to give people help and comfort.

Over the last two weeks, more than 80 volunteers from Salinas, all the way up to Petaluma have been sent to Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas to help with relief efforts, including:

  • 32 volunteers from the Bay Area Chapter.
  • 27 volunteers from the Silicon Valley Chapter
  • 19 volunteers from the Santa Cruz Chapter
  • 4 volunteers from the Monterey Bay Area Chapter
  • Nationally, over 3.000 Red Cross volunteers have been deployed.

Volunteers are traveling to community after community along the Gulf Coast, ramping up mobile feeding efforts and handing out relief supplies, while continuing to shelter those who still need a safe place to stay.

Mobile kitchens capable of making thousands of meals a day are setting up in the affected areas and the Red Cross has already served more than 42,000 meals and snacks.

Our massive relief effort includes six states and is expected to last for weeks to help people recover at a cost of tens of millions of dollars.

Donations will ensure that we reach everyone who needs help.

“We’re estimating that this massive relief operation for Isaac could cost as much as tens of millions of dollars, and our costs are growing by the hour,” said Charley Shimanski, senior vice president for Red Cross Disaster Services. “We haven’t raised anywhere near the millions of dollars we will need to pay for our efforts. The public has always come through when Americans needed help and we are counting on them now.”
