The Red Cross Preparedness group is joining the Maple in April Festival to spread awareness about how to be ready when disasters or emergencies occur

The American Red Cross Northeastern New York Region’s Disaster and Preparedness team will attend the 9th annual Maple in April Festival in Hadley, NY on Sunday, April 28, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to promote being prepared for emergencies in the community.

“The Red Cross Preparedness group is joining the Maple in April Festival to spread awareness about how to be ready when disasters or emergencies occur,” said Julie Parlato, Regional Preparedness Associate for Red Cross Northeastern NY.

The festival kicks off Friday night, April 26, with dinner at the firehouse followed by the annual talent show at the Hadley-Luzerne High School Auditorium. Saturday, April 27, and Sunday, April 28, are two days filled with family fun and events. On Sunday, the ARCNENY Disaster and Preparedness team will present their Be Red Cross Ready and Citizen CPR programs.

The Be Red Cross Ready program teaches simple and effective steps people can take to protect themselves and loved ones during emergencies in under an hour. When disasters strike, there isn’t always much time to respond, so it is important to be ready. Be Red Cross Ready teaches participants to build an emergency preparedness kit, make a plan and stay informed.

The Red Cross Citizen CPR program teaches the public a modified version of CPR, demonstrating hands-only resuscitation. It is a non-certificate program that teaches easy and effective compressions which could improve the chances of saving a life. The program lasts for 15 minutes and is for people age 10 and up.
