Quad Cities Area Annual Meeting held May 23rd

The American Red Cross of the Quad Cities Area held its Annual Meeting on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at Stoney Creek Inn and Conference Center in Moline. The Annual Meeting included the elections of officers and board members and the recognition of donors and volunteers of the American Red Cross.

Some of the awards and recognitions given included:

Newly Elected Board Members for First Three-Year Term:

  • Chapter Chair Award For Outstanding Volunteer Service – Each year we recognize a Red Cross volunteer with the Chapter Chair’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. The volunteer receiving the Chapter’s Chair Award this year was Jim Kapalis from Davenport, IA who is a disaster and fundraising volunteer. He has deployed across the country on national disasters and has helped locally with disaster and to create community awareness of the Red Cross.

    Disaster Volunteer of the Year – This year it was awarded to Jayne Booth, Moline, Illinois. Jayne has deployed on eight national disasters and is a leader on the Red Cross disaster health services and mental health services teams. She also responds to local disasters.

    S.T.A.R. Award - The S.T.A.R. award stands for Super Terrific Achievement Recognition and is given to an outstanding youth volunteer. This year’s recipient was Jennifer Lude, Matherville, Illinois, president of the Sherrard High School Red Cross Club.

    Business Partners Awards:

    Blaze Restoration/ServiceMaster by Blaze, Moline, Illinois - Blaze Restoration is a part of the Red Cross Saving Lives Circle, making a multi-year commitment to the Red Cross and has been an annual sponsor of the Red Cross Golf Outing.

    Country Financial, Princeton, Illinois – Country Financial has been the presenting sponsor of the Bureau County Wine Tasting since the event’s creation four years ago. Their support and advocacy for the American Red Cross is a great asset to the Bureau County Branch.

    Davenport Noon Optimist Club, Davenport, Iowa - The club has sponsored Red Cross Family Safety Day and provided financial support for Red Cross Youth programs in the community. With their assistance, the Red Cross has provided thousands of youth with life-saving skills and training in how to handle emergency situations.

    Disaster Partners Awards:

    Hotel Blackhawk, Davenport, Iowa – When local rivers began to flood, the Hotel Blackhawk reached out and offered to help. Hotel Blackhawk donated rooms for out of town Red Cross volunteers, relieving a very large financial burden for the Red Cross. They also support local fundraising through their donations to special events.

    Davenport Rotary Club and City of Davenport Fire Department, Davenport, Iowa - In April, the Rotary canvassed three neighborhoods and 300 homes with fire safety information. On their route, they discovered one home that had no working smoke detector, so the fire department went back the next day to install one.

    Annual Disaster Giving Partner Award:

    John Deere Foundation - The Annual Disaster Giving Partner Award is given to individuals and corporations who make annual significant gifts to the American Red Cross. In the past year, the John Deere Foundation has made significant contributions to the Red Cross for local chapter services and to relief efforts across the country.

    Media Partner Awards:

    Quad City Times, Davenport, Iowa - The Quad City Times provides excellent coverage when the Red Cross is responding to local and national disasters as well as coverage on Red Cross events in the community. The Times had donated advertising to help promote Red Cross events and campaigns. During Superstorm Sandy, the Times helped us to attract and thank donors.

    Blood Services Partner Awards:

    CGH Medical Center, Rock Falls, Illinois, The hospital hosts 6 very successful yearly blood drives, while their clinic hosts 4. Their dedicated volunteers create personal relationships with their donors and strive to get everyone in the hospital and surrounding community to donate.

    Ken Cocking, Prophetstown Lion’s Club, Prophetstown, Illinois - Ken is outstanding with recruiting both donors and volunteers, regularly exceeding his collection targets. Ken is an advocate in the community and has helped to recruit additional sponsors in Prophetstown. Ken goes above and beyond not only recruiting for Prophetstown’s Community Blood drives, but also their platelet drives, keeping him busy each month.
