Red Cross Assists After 12-Unit Apt. Building is Damaged by Fire

American Red Cross disaster services volunteers with the Vermont & the New Hampshire Upper Valley Region met with many of the displaced residents at the nearby Kilton Library to help assess their emergency needs.

After fire broke out this morning at a 12-unit apartment building located at 81 Seminary Hill in West Lebanon, NH American Red Cross volunteers responded to meet with displaced residents. While the number of units damaged by fire, smoke or water was limited, it had quickly become clear that until certain building repairs were completed, none of the residents would be returning to their homes tonight.

American Red Cross disaster services volunteers with the Vermont & the New Hampshire Upper Valley Region met with many of the displaced residents at the nearby Kilton Library to help assess their emergency needs. At this hour, arrangements for overnight lodging at a local hotel have been made for seven of the building’s families. The Red Cross volunteers remain ready to work with other residents who come forward requesting assistance. It is believed that most residents may be able to return to their homes as early as tomorrow afternoon.

Red Cross Disaster Action Teams are comprised of volunteers who, when requested, provide client assistance for victims of disaster and can also assist first responders with rehabilitative services in the form of hydration and food, as other volunteers did yesterday at the scene of the house fire in Orleans, VT. While assistance traditionally takes the form of lodging and financial assistance, the Red Cross caseworkers also provide referrals to additional local and state resources. Where needed, the Red Cross can also offer disaster mental health and disaster health services.
