Red Cross Helps Fund Home Repairs after Sandy

When you’re down and out, you really look for that help.

The American Red Cross is one of several organizations funding the Neighborhood Revitalization NYC Home Repair and Mold Remediation Programs to help homeowners affected by Superstorm Sandy.

The Home Repair Program was able to help Staten Island homeowner Nick Randazzo repair his home after nine feet of water engulfed it during Superstorm Sandy. The goal is to provide funding for repairs to as many as 600 homes damaged by Sandy throughout New York City’s five boroughs.

Randazzo has lived in his New Dorp Beach home for more than 15 years. “Everything was gone,” he said in describing the damage to his basement. “From the boiler to the windows to doors; the damage was immense.” Despite funding from government agencies, the homeowner wasn’t able to manage more than $100,000 in repair costs until receiving help from the Neighborhood Revitalization NYC Home Repair Program.

“Thank God for the Red Cross, the other organizations, and every person who came and stayed,” Randazzo said. “What would I say to people who donated? They spent their money well and it’s being used wisely.” His home has undergone mold remediation and new drywall and painting.

MOLD REMEDIATION Thanks to the generosity of Red Cross donors, more than 1,900 homes damaged by Superstorm Sandy have had mold remediation completed and progress continues every day. The program hopes to provide mold remediation to about 2,000 Sandy-affected homes throughout New York City’s five boroughs.

“The partnership with the American Red Cross and the other funders has helped thousands of homeowners take an important step in the recovery process,” said Dave Rippon, director of Sandy programs, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC). Both programs are being managed by Neighborhood Revitalization NYC, an affiliate of LISC.

The Red Cross partnered with the Robin Hood Foundation, Mayor’s Office of Housing Recovery Operations, the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City and JPMorgan Chase to assist New Yorkers affected by Sandy. The Red Cross awarded LISC nearly $5 million for the Mold Remediation Program and $2 million for the Home Repair Program.

“We’re proud to stand with great partners who are doing valuable work helping people recover from Sandy,” said Josh Lockwood, CEO, American Red Cross Greater New York Region. “By working together, people are getting much needed assistance on their road to recovery.”

The Red Cross has spent or committed $280 million – more than 90 percent of the $308 million received in donations to help those affected by Sandy. The Red Cross plans to use the remaining funds to further help people with housing-related expenses, support community resiliency efforts and for grants to partner organizations.
