Red Cross Hosts Inaugural Stars and Stripes: Saluting the Military

HATTIESBURG, MISS., FRIDAY, MAY 3, 2013— The American Red Cross South Mississippi Chapter is hosting its inaugural Stars and Stripes event May 17 from 6-10 p.m. at the University of Southern Mississippi Thad Cochran Center Ballroom located at 118 College Drive in Hattiesburg. The Salute to the Military event is scheduled during U.S. Armed Services Week and falls on the eve of Armed Services Day, celebrated May 18 this year.

Honorees include Brigadier General (Ret.) Steve Parham, Specialist Fifth Class (Ret.) Ted Tibbett and Private First Class (Ret.) Clarence Magee.

“The Red Cross is appreciative of our community members who not only give back to Red Cross, but also give back to the community,” said John Brown, Red Cross Hattiesburg Advisory Board Chairman. “We are excited to honor these three gentlemen for their service to our country as well as the countless hours of volunteer service they have given to the Hattiesburg community.”

In addition to the awards and recognition for each honoree, a keynote address will be given by Major General Jeff Hammond from the University of Southern Mississippi. The evening will also feature entertainment by Rewind featuring Lady Patrice and a silent auction. Several local restaurants will be on hand serving tastings of their favorite menu items.

Armed Forces Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May. Armed Forces Week begins on the second Saturday of May and ends on the third Sunday of May. Because of their unique training schedules, National Guard and Reserve units may celebrate Armed Forces Day/Week over any period in May.
