Red Cross Provides Emergency Relief From Floods

Once the immediate threat to people’s lives and safety is addressed, the work of recovery begins.

The American Red Cross provided emergency shelter overnight to Marion County residents after floodwaters invaded their homes.  Working with local EMA and other emergency response agencies, Red Cross volunteers and staff are addressing the community’s needs as high waters from the recent rain and snowmelt threaten many areas in and around Central Ohio.

The flooding has impacted several parts of Marion County and the Red Cross has two Emergency Response Vehicles in the area to provide relief. Volunteers are also working closely with local partners in several other counties that are likely to be impacted next by the rivers and streams that are overflowing their banks.  With experts predicting continuing rising waters, it is possible that there will be Central Ohio families who are unable to be in their homes on Christmas.

One shelter was open to evacuees in LaRue overnight, where some residents were taken by rowboats as more than two feet of water rose inside their ground-floor apartments.

“Flooding is a particularly devastating disaster,” said Matt Bertram, CEO, American Red Cross of Central-Southeast Ohio.  “Once the immediate threat to people’s lives and safety is addressed, the work of recovery begins. Thanks to the ongoing support of generous donors, the Red Cross will be with them every step of the way.”

More information regarding the American Red Cross response to Central Ohio flooding will be available once disaster experts assess the ongoing situation later this morning.
