Red Cross Resources Still Available for Colorado Flood Survivors

The Red Cross is still here to help them as they go through what can be a long process

As residents affected by September’s devastating floods continue to recover and put their lives back together, the American Red Cross of Colorado would like to provide helpful reminders of resources and information that are available to assist with recovery.

The Red Cross continues to operate its Colorado Flood Relief Hotline 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Residents with flood-related needs can call to speak with a caseworker who can connect them with useful referrals, help them navigate the assistance and recovery process, and provide Red Cross assistance for qualified, unmet needs such as transportation, move-in assistance and food. The number to call is 888-635-6381.

“It is not unusual for people to discover new challenges they don’t know how to solve as they go through clean-up and recovery, and we want them to know that the Red Cross is still here to help them as they go through what can be a long process,” said Marlys DeVries, Red Cross Job Director for the Colorado Floods response. “During the first weeks of a disaster, survivors may be focused on immediate, obvious needs such as cleaning out their home or finding a new home, but later they may discover that they need help replacing documents and don’t know where to start, or they may realize they are struggling to cope emotionally and need to speak with someone trained in coping with trauma.”

In addition to the call center, the Red Cross has established an “Isolated Communities Emergency Response Team” that is on standby to go to communities that request help from the Red Cross as new needs arise.

A four-person team is ready to deploy within 12 to 24 hours of a request for Red Cross assistance. Team members can provide Red Cross health, mental health and casework services, and are trained to assess the community’s needs and make recommendations for further services.

Finally, the Red Cross offers a wealth of printed and resources online to help residents with their recovery. Caseworkers have been handing out pamphlets to flood survivors, and the resources are also available online, such as:
