A disaster team from the American Red Cross-Black Hills Area Chapter deployed yesterday evening to a tornado that destroyed three homes and damaged four structures including a church in Allen, South Dakota.

To date, we have distributed food and water, provided lodging for displaced individuals and conducted damage assessments on structures. We are in the process of meeting with the impacted families to verify their needs and offer financial assistance.

Allen is located in Bennett County on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Fortunately, only the southeast corner of town was impacted.

Interestingly, a youth group from Oklahoma is staying at the church that sustained damage. They were visiting Allen as a community service project. None of the youth were hurt and their belongings were intact.

The Red Cross is assisting the displaced families in cooperation with tribal authorities.
