Red Cross assists families displaced by fire in Lynn, MA

Red Cross volunteers worked quickly with Lynn Emergency Management to open a shelter in the basement of the Brickett Elementary School, which canceled school for the day.

American Red Cross volunteers today are assisting at least 40 people, two dogs and a macaw displaced by a fire at 145 Lewis St. in Lynn. A blaze tore through the building around midnight on Sunday, affecting residents of 25 units.

Volunteers worked quickly with Lynn Emergency Management to open a shelter in the basement of the Brickett Elementary School, which canceled school for the day.

Work crews are cutting into the sidewalk to access utilities to the affected building, while firefighters are escorting first and second floor residents into the building to retrieve whatever belongings they can. Belongings from the third floor are inaccessible.
