With Rep. Doris Matsui, D-Sacramento, on hand, 10 local Red Cross volunteers manning five disaster response vehicles left for the Hurricane Sandy disaster zone Saturday afternoon.

The Red Cross' Capitol Region Chapter chief executive officer, Dawn Lindblom, was also present for the group's departure from the chapter's headquarters near Arden Fair mall for the four-day cross-country drive.

"One of the disaster response vehicles was specifically for food distribution, to take hot meals out to people who still have no access to power or running water," said Trent Sunahara, spokesman for Matsui.
