The Barnstable Municipal Airport and the Hyannis Fire Department last week reenacted a disaster response through a full scale emergency drill. The goal of this exercise was intended to provide hands-on training to airline, airport, and emergency personnel so they are well prepared in the event of a plane crash disaster.
The simulation scenario involved a plane crash of 34 passengers and three crew members. It included a controlled fire, the arrival of firefighters and police vehicles and the landing of an emergency helicopter. Public safety officials administered emergency aid to individuals posing as victims and later brought them to Cape Cod Hospital.
The drill, which is required by the Federal Aviation Administration every three years, trains personnel on how to effectively and efficiently respond to a potential air disaster.
