Red Cross Month is a time to remind everyone of the work of the American Red Cross in communities across the country and around the globe – and how we depend on public support to help people in need.

The American Red Cross, in partnership with creative agency BBDO New York and international analog photography community Lomography is opening the “Stories of the American Red Cross” exhibit at Union Station, Washington DC on Friday, March 8 until March 31. The American Red Cross in the National Capital Region will kick-off Red Cross Month at the event, beginning at 10 a.m. Premier Tourist and Landmark Association, a media company based in New York City that represents Union Station and other iconic venues across the country helped make this exhibit possible at the historic location.

Last March, hundreds of kits with journals and cameras were sent to people all over America who at one time or another had been helped by the American Red Cross. They were asked to share their stories, whether they had survived a hurricane or saved a life with their first aid class. The two Lomowalls bearing the American Red Cross logo were handmade from over 3,000 analog photos and are exhibited alongside story walls featuring Lomographs and inspiring handwritten stories. This exhibit is an extension of the heartwarming Red Cross Storytellers Campaign, created by BBDO NY, that launched in December 2012 and will continue throughout 2013.

Volunteers from the National Capital Region who provide support locally to individuals like the people who share their stories through this exhibition will be on hand to tell their own stories. One is a local disaster services volunteer and the other works with the Red Cross Service to Armed Forces volunteer program.

The exhibit tells the stories of people across the country, showing the entire scope of Red Cross work: blood collection and supply; support to America’s military families; help to vulnerable communities around the world; disaster relief; and health and safety training and education. Individuals were sent a simple kit with a camera, and some tips for how best to depict their story. People bravely opened their hearts, sharing stories that are inspiring, tragic, uplifting and unbelievable.

Red Cross Month is a time to remind everyone of the work of the American Red Cross in communities across the country and around the globe – and how we depend on public support to help people in need. The American Red Cross was created in 1881 by Clara Barton and officially chartered by Congress in 1900 to provide national and international relief during disasters, and to give relief to the military and serve as a means of communication between members of the Armed Forces and their families.

In 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed the first Red Cross Month in support of Red Cross fundraising efforts to respond to needs brought on by World War II. Since that time, every president, including President Obama, has designated March as Red Cross Month.
