Tiffany Circle Members Learn Life-Saving Skills
You want the person sitting next to you to be able to save you.

If you were sitting next to someone experiencing a heart attack, would you know how to help them? This question was posed to Jill Howard and other Tiffany Circle members attending the annual Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C.

“You want the person sitting next to you to be able to save you,” said Jill, a founding member and Co-chair of the Kentuckiana Tiffany Circle and a Louisville Area Chapter Board Member.

Unable to raise her hand at the time, Jill made it a goal to become CPR certified. On March 18, 2013, she met that goal along with fellow members of the Kentuckiana Tiffany Circle. The group attended a Red Cross blended learning skills session to practice giving First Aid, CPR and using an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). Prior to the skills session, each member was able to complete online training at their own pace.

Before the introduction of blended learning, Jill said it would have been difficult for her and other members to fit in training between work and family activities. The blended learning format is designed to be flexible. Participants can start and stop as their schedule allows and sign up for an in-person skills session that fits their schedule.

“I absolutely encourage anyone to take the course,” Jill said. “Do blended learning if it’s available. You can do it at home and stop anytime. I stopped and made dinner in the middle of it.”

Taking the online training also gave members time to think of questions. Jill said the First Aid component helped correct actions she might have taken before training, and practicing with the AED gave her confidence to use one in case of an emergency.

“The AED was the best thing for me,” she said. “I was afraid of them before. I thought only professionals could use them.”

Now Jill is comfortable using an AED, and she plans on making sure her husband is trained, too. With a convenient training option now available, the Tiffany Circle has set a goal to have all members trained in First Aid, CPR and AED.

The American Red Cross currently offers blended learning courses in Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED (combinations of these components are also available) as well as CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuers and Health Care providers. The Tiffany Circle is a powerful network of women leaders and philanthropists joining together to each invest at least $10,000 annually in the mission of the American Red Cross and create engagement opportunities to ensure the Red Cross has the capability to help people prepare for and respond to natural and man-made disasters.
