Nearly 30 Red Cross volunteers are now better equipped to help those affected by disaster thanks to a casework class last weekend.
Client caseworkers evaluate needs, provide services and maintain client records during and following a disaster. This includes finding out how many people have been affected, what they’ll need – like hotel stay or funds for food and clothing, and connecting them to useful resources.
Disaster volunteers are required to the take the training, which is a day-long class that covers all of the principles, procedures and paperwork for how the Red Cross assists individuals on their road to recovery. The training teaches volunteers how to open casework at the scene of a disaster, the skills needed to perform follow-up casework and the tools needed for large-scale disaster deployment.
