March is Red Cross Month, and the American Red Cross takes this opportunity to appreciate all the good works that reflect our local efforts every single day.
For more than 70 years, all of our country’s presidents, starting with FDR and including current President and the organization’s Honorary Chairman, Barack Obama, have designated March as Red Cross Month. Throughout the month, we recognize how the American Red Cross helps people across the country and around the world.
“This month, we honor men and women who deliver relief to communities around the world, and we renew the compassionate spirit that continues to keep our country strong and our people safe,” states the Presidential Proclamation.
During the month of March, everyone is encouraged to take time to appreciate the scope of services that the Red Cross provides. Red Cross responds to nearly 70,000 disasters of all sizes big and small in this country every year. It provides 24-hour support to members of the military, veterans and their families – in war zones, military hospitals and on military installations around the world; collects and distributes about 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply and trains millions of people in first aid, water safety and other life-saving skills. The Red Cross can help make you and your family ready for disasters that can strike, such as a major earthquake, a very real possibility in this region.
During 2013 in the Los Angeles Region, the Red Cross provided services to 774 families and support to 2226 people, providing shelter, food, emotional support and necessities. In addition, in 2013, the region trained nearly 170,849 individuals in CPR and first aid and provided 400,000 lifesaving blood products to patients in need.
Did you know that the Red Cross has five areas of life-saving missions? You can devote yourself to any one of these. Have you ever wondered how families separated by war or natural disaster can reconnect? Become a part of the Red Cross’ Restoring Family Links Mission. Do you know that we support our members of the military and their families every day? Volunteer for our Service to the Armed Forces Mission. Do you know we offer classes in water safety, CPR, babysitting safety? Please visit our website and sign up. Train for DAT – Disaster Action Teams – in your community. In the event of a house fire, trained DAT responders are among the first people you will see, and they will help you through the first steps in recovery. Be on the front line in the event your community needs you. Give money, blood, time.
