The American Red Cross will achieve a century of service in Colorado in 2014. To celebrate, the Red Cross of Colorado will host a kick-off event on Wednesday, Jan. 29, to launch a year-long series of events and campaigns commemorating the organization’s 100-year anniversary in Colorado.

The event is being hosted by Kaiser Permanente, one of 10 donors that have committed $100,000 or more to the Red Cross during its Century year.

“A century of service is a remarkable achievement. In the spring of 1914, as tensions mounted towards what would become WWI, local visionaries saw the need to bring the services of the American Red Cross to the central mountains of the United States. On Nov. 21, 1914, the first Red Cross chapter charters were granted to serve Colorado.

Over the course of the next century, Red Cross volunteers have provided support for members of the military and veterans during and after every U.S. war; launched programs to teach water safety, CPR, first aid, disaster preparedness and other lifesaving skills; and provided aid during disasters large and small - here in Colorado, across the country and around the world.

The American Red Cross of Colorado will be celebrating its Century all year in 2014 through a variety of events and campaigns that aim to honor the contributions of the Red Cross and its volunteers and build the foundation for another 100 years of service in Colorado. Eleven Colorado organizations have already stepped up to help ensure a sustainable, long-term future for Red Cross service in Colorado by committing to support the Red Cross as Century Sponsors. The Red Cross of Colorado would like to extend its gratitude to these Century Sponsors, including: Noble Energy, Western Union Foundation, Ball Corporation, Kaiser Permanente, Newmont Mining, PCL Construction, QEP Resources, Suncor Energy, Vail Resort, Whiting Petroleum and XTO Energy.
