Hawaii Red Cross Assisting Those Affected by Fire on Big Island

Hawaii disaster volunteers assess house fire damage
Volunteers met with those affected to ensure their immediate emergency needs were met.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross responded earlier today to two residential fires in Hawaii County. The fires in Hilo and Keaau occurred last weekend while the families were off island. Both homes were destroyed. Red Cross volunteers went to the scene to ensure the immediate emergency needs of anyone affected, such as shelter, food and clothing, were met. Caseworkers will continue to follow up with the family to ensure their immediate needs are met, and to provide referrals to assist with their disaster recovery.

The Red Cross encourages all families to make a disaster plan to include an evacuation plan with two different routes of escape, a communications plan to help families reconnect after disaster and a disaster supplies kit that is readily available to aid in a quick evacuation. Information on developing a family plan is available to the public at www.redcross.org, or a brochure can be requested by calling 734-2101.
