“It is critical to have a plan for your pet before disaster strikes, so everyone can remain safe and follow emergency evacuation orders quickly without delay.” - Coralie Matayoshi, Chief Executive Officer of the Hawaii State Chapter

Honolulu, Hawaii – September 25, 2013: It’s National Preparedness Month, and the Hawaii Red Cross is partnering with PetSmart to help pet parents be prepared before disasters strike.

“It is critical to have a plan for your pet before disaster strikes, so everyone can remain safe and follow emergency evacuation orders quickly without delay,” said Coralie Matayoshi, Chief Executive Officer of the Hawaii State Chapter. “We are grateful that PetSmart is helping us share this message with pet owners.”

“The best way to protect your family from the effects of any emergency situation is to have a disaster plan in place. At PetSmart, we believe that our pets are a part of the family and understand that plan must include your pets,” said PetSmart Mililani store manager Kevin Rokosz. “We are proud to partner with the Hawaii Red Cross on this important initiative.”

On Saturday, September 28, from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., PetSmart Mililani will host a Red Cross preparedness event at their store located at Town Center of Mililani, 95-660 Lanikuhana Avenue. This will be a great opportunity for pet parents to make a plan and assemble a kit for their pets.

  • Red Cross volunteers will be on-site to share disaster preparedness tips with pet parents.
  • Sample pet disaster kits will be displayed, and a checklist of items will be distributed so that pet parents can assemble their own kits.
  • A PetSmart coupon for $5 off a $20 purchase will be available.
  • The first 50 people to arrive will receive a certificate for free Red Cross Pet First Aid training, courtesy of PetSmart.
  • Free Dog and Cat first aid books will also be given out, courtesy of PetSmart.
  • Red Cross disaster mascot dog will greet keiki.
  • Red Cross volunteers will demonstrate free Red Cross phone apps (hurricane, first aid, earthquake, and tornado).
