The Hawaii State Chapter of the American Red Cross has been awarded a $15,000 grant from Matson to support disaster preparedness and response efforts.

Matson Senior Vice President-Operations Ronald J. Forest, who has been elected to the Hawaii Chapter board, said “Matson is pleased to again support the American Red Cross’ disaster preparedness and training capabilities for the Hawaii community.  Our shipping provides a vital lifeline to the island economies of Hawaii, Guam, Micronesia and the South Pacific and we encourage households and other businesses to prepare ahead of time for natural disasters which can impact the entire Pacific Rim.”

“We greatly appreciate the continued generosity of Matson,” said Coralie Chun Matayoshi, Chief Executive Officer of the Hawaii State Chapter of the American Red Cross.  “Thanks to support like this, the Red Cross can continue to serve communities throughout the Hawaiian Islands before, during and after disasters.”

Last year, the American Red Cross, Hawaii State Chapter, responded to 82 disasters (about one every 4 days), providing food, clothing, shelter and caring support to those individuals and families affected by the tragic events.

The American Red Cross of Hawaii is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disaster, provides emergency communications to members of the Armed Forces and their families, and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. All Red Cross disaster assistance is free and is made possible by donations.
