Red Cross Assisting Those Affected By Wind Damage in Hilo
Hawaii Red Cross assist family with temporary housing, clothing, food and household items after roof blown off.

Honolulu, Hawaii – December 31, 2013: Volunteers with the American Red Cross responded yesterday to residential wind damage to a home on Iloko Street in Hilo. Red Cross disaster volunteers met with the affected family of 4 whose roof was blown off and assisted them with their immediate emergency needs for temporary housing, food, household items and clothing. The cause is believed to be a microburst from the thunder storm. Caseworkers will continue to follow up with anyone affected in the coming weeks to provide referrals, guidance or additional assistance as needed to help with the recovery process. In addition, the Red Cross is working with Hawaii County to assess damages due to flash flooding.

The Red Cross encourages all families to make a disaster plan to include an evacuation plan with two different routes of escape, a communications plan to help families reconnect after disaster and a disaster supplies kit that is readily available to aid in a quick evacuation. Information on developing a family plan is available to the public at, or a brochure can be requested by calling 734-2101.
