The Regional Chief Operating Officer for the American Red Cross of West Michigan, Mike Mitchell, is deploying to Colorado to assist with the ongoing flooding disaster in the state.

Heavy rains have caused flooding in Larimer, Weld, Boulder, and Jefferson Counties and residents in Boulder, Colorado, are being evacuated. The Red Cross has opened 7 shelters for hundreds of overnight residents.

Mitchell, also the Chapter Executive for the American Red Cross of Ottawa County based in Holland, will be working as a Response Networking Manager in Colorado where he will manage the technology being used within the disaster relief operation.

“Events like these are what we practice for,” said Mitchell. “We’re always preparing during non-disaster times, and when something happens, we’re ready to respond.”

Mitchell departs for Denver on Saturday and expects to be in Colorado for two weeks. Red Cross leadership from across the country, like Mitchell, will support the disaster response in Colorado. The volunteer base there will work as part of the response team.
