Local Red Cross to Honor Five Community Partners at Gala

JACKSON, MISS., THURSDAY, JANUARY 23, 2014— The American Red Cross Mississippi Capital River Chapter will host its Save the Day Gala on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at the Country Club of Jackson beginning at 6 pm. This year’s annual event will honor five community partners who help “save the day” during times of blue skies and gray. The local honorees represent excellence in service in their respective areas:

  • Disaster Services: Robert Latham, Executive Director, Mississippi Emergency Management Agency. Latham is being honored for his leadership and support during local and regional emergency disaster responses.
  • Emergency Services: John Elfer, Director for Emergency Management, Warren County, Miss. Elfer is being honored for his assistance in referring fire families to the Red Cross for shelter, food and other needs when displaced from their homes.
  • Service to the Armed Forces: David Watson Allen, Staff Chaplain, G.V. Sonny Montgomery Veterans Administration Medical Center. Allen is being honored for his service to veteran and military families and support of the annual Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign.
  • Health and Safety: Ellen Noble, Health and Safety Instructor, American Red Cross. Noble is being honored for her outstanding service, commitment and dedication to teaching aquatics and other Red Cross lifesaving classes.
  • International Services: Latin American Business Association (LABA) in Mississippi is being honored for humanitarian service and support through Red Cross disaster fundraising that aided relief and recovery efforts in Mexico following the devastating spring storms.  

The gala is a volunteer-led fundraiser that supports the Miss. Capital River Chapter, its programs and service delivery in the west central nineteen counties which include Adams, Amite, Claiborne, Copiah, Franklin, Hinds, Issaquena, Jefferson, Lawrence, Lincoln, Madison, Pike, Rankin, Sharkey, Simpson, Walthall, Warren, Wilkinson and Yazoo.

In addition to the awards ceremony, the elegant evening event includes live music, a cocktail reception, gourmet buffet specialties, and silent/live auctions.
