Floods are among the most frequent and costly natural disasters. The Red Cross offers the following safety tips for people in areas affected by flooding:

  • Stay away from floodwaters. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
  • If you come upon a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  • Keep children out of the water.
  • Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood danger.
  • Additional safety tips are available at www.redcross.org/prepare/disaster/flood. People are also encouraged to download the free Red Cross Flood App to their iPhone or Android device. The app features safety and preparedness tips, flood warning alerts and much more.

Anyone wishing to help people affected by fires, flooding or other disasters is asked to consider donating to the Disaster Relief Fund by calling 1-800-REDCROSS, visiting www.redcross.org, or texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to charge a $10 donation to their cell phone bill.
