Red Cross Responding to Storm Damage

We have our Disaster Action Teams out in the affected areas, meeting with families and assessing their immediate needs. With the power still out in some areas, families may need water, ice, and other items that we can help them with.

Volunteer disaster responders of the American Red Cross of Hancock, Seneca, and Wyandot Counties have been busy since Wednesday evening, responding to calls for assistance following the severe storms that swept through the region.

Six families in Findlay, Fostoria, and Republic have received emergency assistance for lodging, food, and other immediate needs. In addition to damage from the storm, the Red Cross of Wyandot County also responded to an apartment fire in Sycamore late Wednesday evening. Four units in the apartment were affected but only one family required emergency lodging and food assistance. The Red Cross provided clean up kits to the families who were able to stay in their apartments.

According to Executive Director Todd James, the Red Cross is continuing to evaluate the damage and needs in the area. “We have our Disaster Action Teams out in the affected areas, meeting with families and assessing their immediate needs. With the power still out in some areas, families may need water, ice, and other items that we can help them with.”

The Red Cross announced yesterday that they will be distributing clean up kits to assist families in cleaning and disinfecting basements and rooms of their homes that were affected by water. The kits will be distributed on Friday, July 12, 2013 from noon to 4:00 p.m. at the following locations:

  • American Red Cross of Hancock County office, 125 Fair St, Findlay
  • Commercial Savings Bank, 128 South Vance Street, Carey
  • American Red Cross of Seneca County office in the Tiffin Mall, Tiffin
  • American Red Cross of Wyandot County office, 102 South 7th Street, Upper Sandusky
  • The kits come in a five gallon reusable plastic bucket and contain items needed to clean and disinfect basements and room affected by flood waters. The kits consist of a mop, broom, gloves, mask, bleach, disinfectant, squeegee, garbage bags, and other items. Cleaning and disinfecting basements and rooms affected by flood waters is important to prevent the growth of mold and mildew, which can cause serious health problems.

James says anyone requiring Red Cross assistance should call (419) 422-9322.
