American Red Cross Veteran Volunteers

Darke County Red Cross, Veteran Volunteers
It all started with Clara Barton and I think she would be proud today of our Veteran Volunteers.

From the days of the Civil War, the American Red Cross has supported the men, women and families of the military, from their first day of service until the Red Crosses services are no longer needed. This close relationship with the military began with American Red Cross founder, Clara Barton and continues today in Darke County, with Executive Director, Lynne Gump and a band of volunteers that visit Darke County veterans in assisted living facilities every month, with gifts of cards or candy, perhaps a colored picture from a child or just the opportunity to lend an ear or a caring hug.

Veteran Visitation is an extremely unique volunteering opportunity available to Darke Countians, requiring the ability to meet calmly with strangers, great listening skills, an open understanding of dealing with the elderly and a care and respect for the American Red Cross mission. Currently, the Darke County Chapter is the only location that offers this type of Red Cross volunteering.
