More than $310,000 Raised at Annual Red Ball Gala

Philadelphia, PA - More than 1,000 guests attended the American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania (SEPA)’s 14th annual Red Ball presented by Independence Blue Cross on Saturday night, March 8th at the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia.

Red Ball raised more than $310,000 for Red Cross disaster relief and Red Cross House – The Center for Disaster Recovery, the one-of-a-kind short-term housing facility in University City where hundreds of local families every year begin their recovery from fires, floods, and other disasters.

Guests at the annual “red tie gala” sampled cuisine, drinks, wine, and craft beers from some of the region’s best restaurants and microbrews. Food Network Iron Chef Alex Guaraschelli was among the honored guests. For the second time in three years, Cakes and Candies by MaryEllen won the Red Ball restaurant competition, as voted by guests. American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania CEO Judge Renee Cardwell Hughes and Red Ball co-hosts Keith Jones and Deanna Durante presented the glass award to owner MaryEllen Bowers.

Guests danced the night away with entertainment provided by CTO World Entertainment Productions, enjoyed the museum’s exhibits, carousel rides, mingled with Philadelphia’s social and business leaders, bid on luxury items in the silent auction and learned more about the mission of the Red Cross through videos and displays. The VIP room featured cuisine by Catelli Duo of Voorhees, NJ.

“Once again, the Philadelphia region showed its overwhelming generosity and made the Red Ball a huge success,” said Judge Renee Cardwell Hughes, American Red Cross SEPA CEO. “Red Ball is the culmination of a lot of work by a lot of dedicated people, so it is very gratifying to see everyone have a great time and raise vital funds for our work at the same time.”

The public is invited to regularly check out or to link to photos from and articles about the event.

The Red Ball presented by Independence Blue Cross is the American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania signature event for Red Cross Month. Every president since Franklin Roosevelt – in 1943 – has deemed March as National Red Cross Month.
