Red Cross volunteers assist the displaced and first responders

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ... (Rutland, VT – February 21, 2014) Volunteers with the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team out of Rutland County have assisted four people displaced by an early morning fire at a Cleveland Avenue apartment building in Rutland, VT. Temporary lodging and financial assistance to help with food, clothing and other items lost in the blaze have been provided.  The volunteers have been advised that a fifth resident was receiving treatment at Rutland Regional Medical Center and will offer assistance to that individual as needed. The volunteers assisting the displaced today were told by one of them that they had lost a dog in the fire.

In addition to the family services provided, the volunteers offered canteen services, including hot coffee, water and snacks, for the firefighters and other first responders on scene.

This morning’s response also included collaboration with Green Mountain Wireless Society, a local amateur radio club. A member of the group provided coverage on radios back at the Red Cross office on Strongs Avenue in Rutland, where Green Mountain Wireless uses space and holds its monthly meetings.  This process allowed for a back-up form of communication as the volunteers worked at the fire scene. While the wireless communication was not needed today, it was a good test of this partnership.

The immediate assistance provided by Red Cross volunteers today, and at each house and apartment fire to which they respond, gives the impacted residents time and a bit of breathing room to figure out their next steps. The Red Cross knows that the recovery process begins the moment disaster strikes.
