Director, Media Relations
Anne Marie Borrego serves as a primary spokesperson and manages the organization’s day-to-day interaction with print and broadcast media. She leads a team of media relations professionals that not only plans and implements communications strategies to support key initiatives, but also manages interaction with media during major disaster operations.
Before joining the Red Cross in 2011, Borrego provided strategic counsel and tactical assistance to a number of nonprofit organizations, federal agencies, foundations and educational institutions. Prior to that, Borrego spent more than a decade as a journalist that included staff positions at the Chronicle of Higher Education, Inc. Magazine and The Wall Street Journal. While living in Germany, she also wrote for American Lawyer and The Wall Street Journal Europe and served as a copywriter for an international advertising campaign for Pampers.
Chief Public Affairs Officer
Suzanne (Suzy) C. DeFrancis oversees all enterprise-wide communications, government relations and strategic partnerships to advance the mission of the American Red Cross.
Previously, DeFrancis served as assistant secretary for public affairs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She oversaw all communications and managed the department’s press office, speech and editorial division, web division, and broadcast studio. Before that, she served in the White House as deputy assistant to the president for communications where she developed communications strategy, messaging and planning for a wide range of policy issues. From 1997 to 2002, DeFrancis was senior vice president and director of public affairs at Porter Novelli.

Senior Officer, Hispanic Public Relations & Communications
Cynthia Gutierrez-White is the American Red Cross lead spokesperson for Spanish language media and works across the organization’s lines of business to develop communication strategies that raise our visibility within the Hispanic community. Prior to her national post, she served at the Red Cross South Florida Region for almost four years as Division 5 Director, Spanish Communications and as Regional Director of Communications. While there, Gutierrez-White expanded public awareness in the Spanish market by participating in many national TV interviews with Univision, Telemundo Networks and others.
In the wake of the 2010 Haitian Earthquake, Gutierrez-White and her team facilitated and participated in hundreds of media interviews and her connection with Univision helped create the “Unidos por Haiti” telethon and concert that raised $7.5 million for Haiti relief. Before joining the Red Cross, Gutierrez-White spent 14 years working in the field of public and media relations for a variety of establishments ranging from the Telemundo Network, Miami Children’s Hospital and the Florida Department of Health Preparedness Committee.
Vice President, Public Relations
Laura Howe is responsible for public relations and overall corporate media strategies for the Red Cross. She serves as one of the primary Red Cross spokespeople and oversees day-to-day corporate media relations and crisis communications efforts. In addition, she manages specialized communication teams for disaster services, international services, biomedical services, services to Armed Forces, social media and chapter operations.
Laura also manages the team responsible for all Red Cross social media efforts and has led the organization’s effort to use of social media as means to get information to disaster victims. She often appears at conferences and on panels promoting the use of social media during disasters.
She also spent eight years as a television news reporter and anchor and now frequently provides interviews on behalf of the Red Cross for national media outlets such as The New York Times, USA Today CNN, Fox News, MSNBC and The Weather Channel.
