What would you do if you couldn’t return to your home after a fire or a flood? How would you reconnect with your family if you became separated following a disaster? Do you have the correct items in your disaster preparedness kit? These are questions that you need to be able to answer.

The American Red Cross Greater Phoenix Chapter is working to ensure that people throughout Arizona are ready to handle disasters by training individuals in lifesaving skills and by empowering local businesses and organizations to develop the necessary resources and networks. By fostering a culture of readiness through personal preparedness and collaboration among community groups, people become more resilient, and they’re able to recover quicker after disasters.

Disaster Preparedness Education

Be Red Cross Ready training focuses on three simple steps – Get a Kit. Make a Plan. Be Informed. It’s free to the public, covering the actions necessary to ensure that individuals, families and their communities are prepared to respond to disasters both small and large. Ideal for schools, churches, neighborhood watch groups, retirement homes and businesses. Courses last 30 minutes to an hour, and they’re also available in Spanish. To register, call 602-336-6660 or send an e-mail to outreach.gcc.az@redcross.org.

Youth Preparedness

Disasters affect everyone, and, just like adults, children and youth need to know what to do if something happens. The Pillowcase Project, focused on third graders, not only teaches how to prepare for disasters, but also coping skills for emergencies. Participants receive a special "Preparedness Pillowcase" to take home when they are done. Classes are also available for older kids through our Masters of Disaster workshop.

To register for a Masters of Disasters or Pillowcase Preparedness presentation, call 602-336-6660 or send an e-mail to outreach.gcc.az@redcross.org.

Team Firestopper

Skip the gym and get some exercise by walking during one of Team Firestopper’s community canvassing fire safety awareness campaigns. Volunteers travel door to door in neighborhoods across the state, distributing brochures, door hangers, fact sheets and other materials to arm people with home fire safety tips. Team Firestopper offers information through a comprehensive program targeting communities that are disproportionately affected by fires. For information about upcoming Team Firestopper projects, call 602-336-6660 or send an e-mail to outreach.gcc.az@redcross.org.
