The American Red Cross in Our Community

The American Red Cross has been active in our area since 1898, when Sonoma County volunteers made sandwiches for the men of Company E as they marched away to fight in the Spanish-American War. The American National Red Cross officially chartered the Chapter in 1917.

Today, with six counties, and a combined population of 941,000 people, the Chapter has one of the fastest growing populations in the state.

It is an area that is prone to three types of major disasters:

  • Flooding
  • Earthquakes
  • Fires

Typically, the local Red Cross responds to about 70 fires each year, including single family fires and wildland fires that affect people’s homes.

Each year, hundreds of local Red Cross volunteers plus our small number of employees:

  • provide relief to those affected by disasters
  • empower community members to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies
  • help people learn how to take care of their families and neighbors
  • make our community more resilient to disasters large and small
