Find Family Internationally After Crisis

  • The Restoring Family Links blog is in support of the work done by the American Red Cross Restoring Family Links program which helps find family members separated by crisis, conflict, or migration. This is a personal blog, so all opinions are of authors, not of the American Red Cross.

  • Separated almost 75 years by WWII, childhood friends Gunter Ullmann and Elfie Haas were reunited with help from the Red Cross in May 2012. "We'll get to know each other again and see what the future will bring," Ullmann said.

The family messages transmitted by the American Red Cross can be very brief, but the three short words "I am alive" may be all that is needed to ease the minds of distraught loved ones half a world away.

Armed conflict, international disasters and migration leave millions of people around the globe in urgent need of humanitarian assistance every year. As a truly worldwide network, the volunteers of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent are able to help families reconnect.

The American Red Cross helps families separated internationally when:

  • Families have been separated internationally as a result of war, disaster, migration or other humanitarian emergency.
  • Families have tried normal channels of communication to the extent possible.
  • The family member making the inquiry is able to provide essential information on the sought person.
  • The family member making the inquiry is a relative, who had been in direct contact with the sought person before the crisis occurred.
