Services to the Armed Forces

  • Volunteer with Services to the Armed Forces in Hawaii

The American Red Cross provides a vital communication lifeline between military service members and their families by relaying urgent information in times of emergency.

If you are a member of the armed forces, retiree or military family member and wish to initiate a Red Cross message or need emergency assistance, please call toll free, 1-877-272-7337, and a case worker will assist you. Hawaii staff and volunteers will follow-up with local families and servicemen to services and referrals as needed.

Volunteer on Military Bases

The American Red Cross relies on volunteers to fulfill our mission of providing care and comfort to those in need. Each base has a variety of volunteering opportunities, please call the individual sites for more information.

Human Animal Bond Program at Tripler Army Medical Center

The American Red Cross runs a Human Animal Bond Program at Tripler Army MedicalCenter to assist patients who are recovering from physical, mental or social illness.

Volunteers regularly bring their pets to wards, clinics and waiting areas for informal visits with patients. All animals are screened by Army Veterinary Services and must pass strict behavioral and physical qualifications to be a part of this program. Handlers also receive special training.

Volunteer therapy pets (dogs, cats, and rabbits) visit patients at Tripler Army Medical Center as part of the Red Cross Human Animal Bond Program.

The Red Cross is looking for more volunteer therapy pets and handlers. For more

information, contact the Human Animal Bond Program, 433-6631.

Reconnection Workshops

Today's service members are facing repeated deployments to conflict zones around the world. After a deployment, many realize that the return home can be just as challenging as their tour of duty.

Free, confidential Reconnection Workshops, focus on individual and small group discussion that enhances the likelihood of positive reconnections among family members and the successful re-engagement of the service member in civilian life.

Each workshop focuses on a topic area that service members and their families have found relevant to their experience as they transition back home. Current topic areas include:

  • Managing anger
  • Supporting children
  • Building communication
  • Reconnecting with others
  • Recognizing stress and trauma
The workshops assist those impacted by a military deployment and bridge all branches of the Armed Forces. We invite Reserve, National Guard, active duty service members, veterans and their families to participate.

To register for one of these valuable, no-cost, confidential workshops, please contact the Hawaii Services to the Armed Forces Coordinator, Debbie Kaahanui at 808-449-0166 or at
