The American Red Cross offers exceptional undergraduate and graduate college students internships at the Greater Chicago Region, and other selected cities throughout the chapter’s jurisdiction through our PrepaRED University Internship Program.

Our internship program is designed to introduce talented young people to the American Red Cross in key professional areas while attracting a pool of diverse, skilled, enthusiastic young professionals and provide them with an opportunity to build a long-term, substantive relationship with the world’s premier humanitarian organization.

Current Internship Opportunities

  • Blood Services Donor Recruitment Intern
  • The Blood Services Donor Recruitment Intern will be responsible for assisting the Blood Services Department with blood donor recruitment and coordinating blood drives. This position will focus on establishing and building relationships with organizations that host event drives. The Blood Services Intern will also work in conjunction with marketing programs like Empower Youth, Chicago White Sox and hospital programs to increase blood donations.

  • Community Partnerships Intern
  • Under the supervision of the Director of Response Operations, this position will work with the Manager of Community Partnerships, Government Liaison, and other partners to coordinate with community response and recovery organizations through local collaborative groups such as Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD). This position will engage nongovernment and faith-based organizations and work to ensure people throughout the Greater Chicago Regiona are all receiving equitable and appropriate services from the American Red Cross. Effective, cooperative and collaborative working relationships with community and national partners are a critical component of a successful relief operation.

  • Community Preparedness Intern
  • To assist in the development of Community Preparedness programs through research, community outreach, and volunteer capacity building. This intern will work alongside program staff, interns, volunteers and AmeriCorps Safe Families IL members. Responsibilities include working with fire and flood prevention programs, follow-up to corporate preparedness events, youth education and other hazard specific programming. Through coordinating outreach efforts in English and Spanish speaking communities, leading volunteer training sessions, assisting in implementation of weekday/weekend programs and performing some administrative duties the position is critical to the success and dissemination community preparedness programming and information.

  • Disaster Health Services Intern
  • The Disaster Health Services Intern will work with the Health Service Lead by providing administrative support to Red Cross healthcare professionals who provide health services to clients affected by local disasters throughout the Greater Chicago Region. This is a great opportunity for those interested in learning more about administrative functions within a large nonprofit organization, as well as disaster/emergency preparedness.

  • Community Programs and Volunteer Resources Partnership Intern
  • The Community Programs and Volunteer Resources Partnership Intern will work with the Director of Community Programs and Volunteer Resources to develop partnership opportunities for Community Outreach, Youth Preparedness, Volunteer Resources and International Services. The intern will also work with the Kankakee County VOAD, Regional Catastrophic Planning Team and others to define and establish partnerships with community-based organizations, ensuring the public as access and knowledge of Red Cross services.

  • Individual Giving Intern
  • The Individual Giving Intern will support the Development Associate for Donor Relations on the Individual Giving fundraising team. This intern will gain experience in a wide variety of fundraising activities, such as direct donor contact, Raiser’s Edge, creative writing, and marketing. The Individual Giving Intern will work with the Development Associate on the strategy and development of various fundraising programs. We are looking for someone who is passionate, creative and willing to learn about not-for-profit fundraising.

  • Mass Care Sheltering Intern, Chicago and DuPage
  • The Mass Care Sheltering Intern will support the American Red Cross’ recruiting and maintenance of shelter agreements within one or more of the counties we serve. The intern will also frequently be visiting schools, park districts and other partners to secure agreements and survey facilities for ADA-compliancy and other capacity concerns. A significant portion of the position will be involved with managing the National Shelter Database (NSS) and updating hundreds of shelter entries in the database. The intern will also be involved with recruiting and supporting a regional volunteer team that will be responsible for managing the shelter relationships in their area. The intern will be expected to make contact with a minimum of 50 facilities and perform at least 2 site visits per week. Regular reporting will be required at the end of each week. A minimum of four training courses will also be provided at the beginning of the term, each approximately 4 hours in length. These courses will be available during the day, weeknights and some weekends. Based on the availability, we expect that the interns will be able to assist at sheltering and other Mass Care disaster operations.

  • Public Relations Intern
  • The Public Relations Intern will assist the Communication Department by building awareness of the services and programs offered by the Red Cross in the Greater Chicago area through a variety of communications functions. This position offers the opportunity to sharpen basic public relations skills at the world’s leading humanitarian organization. This position will play a role in building the future image of the second largest Red Cross chapter in the US.

  • Service to the Armed Forces Intern
  • The Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) Intern will work to sustain department volunteers and work in conjunction with partner organizations such as the Jesse Brown VA Hospital. The SAF Intern will represent the Red Cross organization by attending community military events, as well as research and work with our partners to create more SAF events. Other tasks may include assisting with grant-related tasks (e.g. ordering, purchasing, delivering supplies). This position will help develop and create a lasting SAF volunteer core team by training volunteers for a variety of projects and event presentations.

  • Special Events Intern
  • This position will be responsible for supporting the Chapter’s special events programs, focusing on the Flirting for Disaster social networking series and Auxiliary Society membership. This position will include limited support of the Heroes Breakfast nomination process. He/she will assist the Development Associate of Special Events in coordinating event logistics and marketing efforts. Must be 21 to apply as events often include adult beverages.

  • Special Events Intern, Heroes Breakfast
  • This position will be responsible for supporting the Chapter’s annual Heroes Breakfast event, with a special focus on event marketing and the nomination process. This position also includes limited support for our young professionals’ Flirting for Disaster events and Auxiliary Society. This person will assist and report to the Development Associate, Special Events.

  • Volunteer Coordinator Intern, DeKalb
  • The Volunteer Coordinator Intern will be responsible for assisting with volunteer recruitment as well as involving current volunteers in community activities throughout the semester. The intern will provide and manage communication between community organizations for planning of activities, in addition to developing current ongoing activities from previous years. This position will also include general office administration tasks as needed.

  • Volunteer Resources Intern
  • The Volunteer Resources Intern will support the Volunteer Coordinator and Volunteer Resources department in recruitment and management of American Red Cross volunteers. This is a great opportunity for individuals interested in volunteer management within a large nonprofit organization.

  • Youth & Young Adult Programs Intern
  • The Youth & Young Adult Programs Intern will support various programs and initiatives in line with the Red Cross mission by planning, coordinating, implementing, and supporting youth-focused programs and activities for those between 13-25 years of age. This position will support the Coordinator with intern and volunteer recruitment and Red Cross Club engagement. The intern will help promote youth and young adult involvement by promoting engagement opportunities in Health & Safety and Preparedness programs, Disaster Services, and Fundraising by developing partnerships and/or programs that target youth and young adults as an opportunity to build capacity for the organization.
