The American Red Cross Greater Phoenix Chapter held its annual Community Leaders Breakfast on May 2 at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix. The Greater Phoenix Chapter’s largest fundraiser drew 200-plus business, government and philanthropic leaders, as well as Red Cross supporters, to honor military service and celebrate Red Cross programs.

This year’s keynote speaker was Joe Johnson, who was taken as a prisoner of war as a teenager during World War II and later wrote “Baby of Bataan: Memoir of a 14-year-old Soldier in World War II.” Greater Phoenix Chapter chairman Tom Christie also spoke, along with two other Greater Phoenix Chapter board members – Don Henninger, the publisher of the Phoenix Business Journal, and Steve Rizley, the vice president and region manager for Cox Communications Arizona. Greater Phoenix Chapter board member Bob Wiedower unveiled a Red Cross flag from WWII, and Arizona National Guard Sgt. Lauren DeVita played The Star-Spangled Banner on a violin following a presentation of colors and a missing in action/prisoner of war ceremony by the National Guard.

The individual recipient of the Deborah King Humanitarian Award was Greater Phoenix Chapter board member Bonnie Trowbridge, the chief audit executive at Apollo Group. Trowbridge has worked tirelessly to build a partnership between the Red Cross and the University of Phoenix that has resulted in a significant sponsorship for the Red Cross and partnerships across both organizations’ lines of service. The corporate honoree of the award was American Express, which backs Red Cross volunteer programs, including the underwriting of the Greater Phoenix Chapter’s annual volunteer recognition breakfast. Additionally, the company’s culture of volunteerism and service extends to its employees, who give of their own time and resources to help Red Cross programs.
