Disaster Services

The American Red Cross Serving Oklahoma prides itself in responding to a disaster in a moments notice. Whether there is an ice storm, fire, tornado, flood, or even an earthquake the Red Cross is there to provide relief to the emergency responders as well as financial assistance to those affected by disaster.

Each year, the American Red Cross responds immediately to more than 67,000 disasters, including house or apartment fires (the majority of disaster responses), hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hazardous materials spills, transportation accidents, explosions and other natural and man-made disasters.

Although the American Red Cross is not a government agency, its authority to provide disaster relief was formalized when, in 1905, the Red Cross was chartered by Congress to "carry on a system of national and international relief."

Red Cross disaster relief focuses on meeting people's immediate emergency disaster-caused needs.

When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross provides:
  • Shelter
  • Food
  • Health and mental health services
  • Feeds emergency workers
  • Handles inquiries from concerned family members outside the disaster area
  • Provides blood and blood products to disaster victims
  • Helps those affected by disaster to access other available resources
How you can help

This relief effort could not be possible without the help of our volunteers. It is volunteers who respond to these disasters and who help families and individuals begin rebuilding their lives. The American Red Cross is always looking for more people who can help in this relief effort.

Become a disaster action team (DAT) member by taking disaster training classes! The DATs respond to local disasters and will even be deployed out to a national disaster. During the hurricanes of 2005, approximately 14 DAT members were deployed to the Gulf Coast.

The possibilities of helping your American Red Cross are endless. Become a DAT member today by calling (405) 228-9500.
