Since its inception the American Red Cross has played a critical role in supporting the armed forces and their families. With resources and expertise around the world, the Red Cross provides communication, welfare inquiries and other critical support to connect military members and their families.

Emergency Communications

In the event of an emergency, critical accident, illness or death of a family member, Red Cross provides emergency communications to all active members of the armed services. After verifying the emergency, we will relay the information to the military authorities who will then deliver the information to the armed forces member. The military command will make emergency leave decisions.

To receive help, please call 877-272-7337.

Have the following information on hand for your call:

  • Name of armed services member
  • Armed services member’s social security number
  • The branch of the military he or she serves
  • The general location of where the armed services member is currently serving
  • Emergency reference contact information (e.g. doctor, nurse, funeral home, etc.)

Pre-deployment Seminars

It is vital for military members and their dependents to understand what services the Red Cross provides before an emergency strikes. Red Cross attends pre-deployment briefings and other unit family gatherings to answer questions and deliver information about Red Cross services available to military families.

Military and Society Applications

Based on individual circumstances, a military aid society (Air Force Aid Society, Navy-Marine Corps Aid Society, Coast Guard Mutual Assistance and Army Emergency Relief) will provide help with emergency expenses such as funeral and burial services and other expenses. The Red Cross helps military members process the paperwork to apply for this assistance. The individual military aid society determines who receives assistance.

Naval Hospital Bremerton

Because of our proximity to local military installations, the Red Cross finds that many residents have a family member, friend or acquaintance who is affiliated with the military. Another way we support our uniformed men and women is by providing volunteers to Naval Hospital Bremerton. Our Red Cross volunteer team averages 1,000 hours of service each month to support patients, health care providers and other staff at the hospital.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us at (360) 475-4341 or Joyce.Berry@med.navy.mil.
