Services to the Armed Forces

  • Nebraska Services to the Armed Forces
The American Red Cross offers services tailored to help soldiers, veterans and their families through the many transitions they experience throughout their lives and careers. The Nebraska/SW Iowa Region’s Service to Armed Forces (SAF) station is based at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, NE.

Resources for Service Members and Their Families

The Red Cross offers free training classes to support service members and their loved ones during the deployment cycle. Classes like Get to Know Us Before you Need Us, Coping with Deployment and Reconnection Workshops provide essential information on how to access support services such as financial assistance, counseling and assistance to Veterans. These sessions are open to all family members and anyone affected by service member’s deployment.

Emergency Communications

In times of emergency, we provide emergency communications that keep families connected to their loved ones including Active duty, Reserve, National Guard units and Veterans, as well as community-based military and their families. The verification in a message assists the service member’s commanding officer with making a decision regarding emergency leave.

These communications are delivered around-the-clock, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. SAF volunteers and staff work in nearly 568 chapters in the United States, on 74 military installations around the world and with our troops in Kuwait, and Afghanistan.

When calling the Red Cross to initiate and emergency message for the Service member, it is helpful to have the following information:

  • Military Members Name
  • Rank
  • Branch of Service
  • Social Security Number & Date of Birth
  • Military Unit

Community Connections

Red Cross volunteers reach out to military members, veterans, and their families in the community, as well as at Offutt Air Force Base, The Erhling Bergquist Clinic, Eastern

Nebraska Veterans Home and the Veterans Administration Medical Center. With volunteers’ support, we participated in 75 special events last year including Families of the Deployed dinners, Yellow Ribbon support briefings, and Spring Spa for Spouses. You will also find Red Cross SAF volunteers making new friends over lunch at the Veterans Home and delivering fresh baked cookies and warm smiles to VA hospital patients all year long.
