In the fall of 2013, the Central New York Region of the American Red Cross is sponsoring the 1st Annual Collegiate Leadership Institute (CLI) from Oct. 18-20 in Ithaca, N.Y. This Red Cross Club training and development Institute is the first of its kind in Central New York and will help build an empowered core of young adult Red Crossers in our 16-county region. About 75 delegates from up to 15 college campuses will receive specialized training in 1. Red Cross services; 2. Leadership Development; and 3. International Humanitarian Law.
The CLI is open to existing clubs and any students who wish to start a club on their college campus. All activities at the CLI are structured to help delegates recognize their leadership potential. Click here to join our Red Cross Club Facebook Page for updates!
2. Leadership Development sessions were designed based on feedback received from Club Executive Board members regarding the successes and challenges of leading a club. This track will address: building new leaders among general club members, fundraising, communications and public relations, etc. Professional facilitators with expertise in each area will lead these sessions and provide club leadership with an opportunity to explore challenges and solutions.
Extreme Teambuilding at Cornell’s Hoffman Challenge Course
All participants at the CLI will have an opportunity to gain leadership and teambuilding experience by taking part in the Hoffman Challenge Course – an outdoor challenge course that puts the concept of “stretching your limits” into action. Whether teams are working together on the zip-lining station or have their feet on the ground in one of the “low-element” challenges, these activities will push everyone to think creatively, problem-solve and expand their ideas and vision for youth and young adults in the Red Cross. 3. Educating the Public about International Humanitarian Law is a core responsibility of the American Red Cross. International Humanitarian Law (IHL) is the body of law that places basic limits on how war is waged. It seeks to reduce the devastation caused by war and to protect the lives and human dignity of vulnerable people during armed conflict. To further that mission, the American Red Cross Central New York Region will host an IHL Forum in partnership with IHL Legal Experts from American Red Cross National Headquarters, the International Committee of the Red Cross and other distinguished guests. In addition to the forum, up to 20 IHL Team Leaders have been selected to implement the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Action Campaign, a new program in its second year sponsored by the National Headquarters of the American Red Cross. The IHL Action Campaign is a hands-on, interactive program teaching youth about International Humanitarian Law through the use of simulations, role play and discussion. IHL Team Leaders from Tompkins, Broome and Onondaga Counties will be trained to implement the IHL Action Campaign curriculum in their respective communities during spring 2014.
