After a two-year hiatus, the Great Chefs Dinner to benefit the American Red Cross of Central New York is back and returning to its roots. The 28th Great Chefs will start at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 30, at the Skaneateles Country Club, which served as the site for many Great Chefs over the years.

The Great Chefs will feature several of the best chefs from the finest restaurants in Central New York. The menu will consist of seven courses, including appetizers, passed hors d'oeuvres, amuse-bouches, entrees and desserts.

The event will also feature silent and live auctions, with the proceeds benefitting the American Red Cross of Central New York disaster services. Among the live auction items: Two dinners for up to 10 guests at an agreed-upon date, when one of the experienced chefs from the Syracuse Chapter of the American Culinary Federation will lead a team of ACF chefs to provide a six-course dinner with paired wines.

Tickets are $250 per person. To purchase a ticket, call 315-234-2225, email angelina.morimanno-boungou@redcross.org, or send a check payable to the American Red Cross of Central New York to the Red Cross office at 344 W. Genesee St., Syracuse, 13202.

The Great Chefs was created in 1986 as a culinary fundraising event to showcase the talents of chefs from the Syracuse Chapter of the American Culinary Federation (ACF). Then-Syracuse ACF officers Chris Cesta, Brian Shore and Michael Redmond worked with local attorney and gourmet Richard “Dick” Scolaro to bring together the culinary talents and enthusiasm of several chefs for that inaugural event.

Steve Landon, the Executive Chef of the 2014 Great Chefs, said the theme of this year’s event will be a continuation of the “Celebrating the Bounty and Pride of New York State” theme from the Great New York State Fair. As passionate supporters of the farm-to-table concept, Landon and the chefs from the Syracuse ACF have worked to create an amazing menu that celebrates the region by featuring local meats, cheeses and award-winning wines.

The delicious food from local farms will be paired with another one of this area’s strongest assets: people who are quick to lend their talents to help others in urgent need.

“We extend our appreciation for the support from the American Red Cross and its devotion to the chefs and the culinary arts by bringing this unique event back to Central New York,” said Landon, the Executive Chef at Vernak Farms in Skaneateles. “Most significant is the gratification we feel as we prepare for this event knowing that we have assisted our regional American Red Cross to continue its mission.”

Proceeds benefit the Red Cross, which provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Working families in Central New York require almost daily emergency assistance because of home fires and other disasters, and in the last year the Red Cross provided more than $180,000 to 803 people from 283 families impacted by fires and floods in Onondaga, Cayuga, Cortland, Madison and Oswego counties.
