Meals on Wheels

  • Subaru Sponsors
Thank you Kendall Subaru for helping our program deliver 4,333 meals in December.

The Red Cross partners with the Lane Council of Government Senior & Disabled Services to serve Meals on Wheels to Lane County residents. The Red Cross Meals on Wheels Program delivers hot, nutritious lunches to seniors and disabled people in the Eugene and Springfield area Monday through Friday.

Our program mission is to prevent and alleviate malnutrition in seniors and disabled individuals, and to help them remain independent in their own home. Our volunteers delivered more than 76,000 meals to nearly 600 clients last fiscal year through this program.

More Than a Meal
Meals on Wheels is more than just a meal. Our program provides social interaction, a safety and welfare check, and referrals to other community services. Dedicated volunteers:
  • Provide caring social interaction to individuals who are very isolated.
  • Administer a daily safety check with their weekday deliveries. When clients do not answer their doors, we check in and around the house to make sure that they are okay. If volunteers cannot locate a client, Meals on Wheels staff are alerted and the client's emergency contacts are called.
  • See our clients on a weekly basis and get to know their personalities and habits so that they can notify staff members when there are changes in a client’s usual behavior and/or in their coping abilities. This provides a vital welfare check service for our clients.

The Meals
All meals are developed by a dietician with a goal of improving overall health and nutrition. Meals on Wheels can be used as a short-term or long-term service, and offers hot meals, frozen meals and emergency food boxes for services interruptions due to inclement weather. Substitutions for diabetic clients are available.

Eligibility & Cost

Clients must be over 60, in our service area, primarily homebound, unable to cook a hot meal, lack the help to cook a hot meal, and they must live in a home that is safe for service delivery. Disabled individuals that are 18-59 are served with referrals from their Medicaid caseworkers.

The cost of the meals to the Red Cross is $8.00. We have a suggested donation of $3.00 per meal. A donation is not required to receive meals and eligibility is not based upon a client’s ability to pay for meal service.

We rely on volunteers to help us portion and deliver an average of 330 meals each day. Kitchen support positions are Monday thru Friday from 8:00am – 11:00am. Delivery positions are Monday thru Friday from approximately 10:45am – 1:00pm. Please visit our Volunteer Page for more information.
